Sugarbabe, by Holly Hill – Book ReviewThe True Story of One Women’s Search to Find a Sugar Daddy
Sugarbabe is the story of an out of work and out of money psychologist living in Sydney, who searches for a sugar daddy and discovers a lot about men as well as herself.
This novel, based on the true story of a women advertising herself as a Sugarbabe is as engaging as it is controversial. After being dumped by her wealthy, albeit married boyfriend, Holly Hill (pseudonym) broke and out of work places an online advertisement for a sugar daddy, offering to pamper the successful candidate with massages, gourmet meals, companionship, and of course sex. All for a generous allowance. Sugarbabe Overview Sugarbabe poses the question ‘How far would you go?’ if you were out of work and out of money. Living in Darlinghust, close to Sydney’s central business district, with a mortgage payment looming and having just been dumped by the wealthy boyfriend that had previously encouraged her to quit her job, Holly was in a bind. Accustomed to a life of keeping well and expensive clothing, Holly needs to make money fast to stay on top of her bills. After the half-joking suggestion from her gay friend to find a sugar daddy, Holly places an advertisement, promising to pamper one gentleman for a weekly allowance. The responses she receives are numerous, many from married men, unhappy with their sex lives. Sugarbabe Review Sugarbabe is a controversial yet highly engaging novel about a taboo subject. Holly is an attractive 40-year-old woman, although she can pass for younger and advertises herself as a 35-year-old, who is encouraged by her friend to be open-minded about her career choices, and thus, advertises for a sugar daddy. Sugarbabe is an interesting novel, and while most readers wont be surprised by the number of business men who cheat on their wives, many may be surprised by how many of them will pay for sex. An engaging and well written story, however, towards the end it does become somewhat preachy as though the author is trying to justify her actions, and force her opinions down the readers throat. Still, Sugarbabe is a great read, allowing the reader to take a voyeuristic approach and see a world unfamiliar to them, the world of sugar babes and sugar daddies. While some readers may not agree with Holly’s view on monogamy, or lack of monogamy, the book gives an insight into the lives of those men, unhappy with their lives and searching for more, as well as the lives of the women who become sugar babes. Sugarbabe is sexy, definitely an adult read, fun and at times serious and is well worth a read. Sugarbabe was first published in 2007 and again in 2008 by Random House, Australia, and has since been published in New York, Toronto, London, Auckland and Johannesburg (ISBN 978-1-74166-818-6). Hill’s second book Toyboy is said to be equally controversial.
